Phoenix Ready for PWC Opener

Phoenix Ready for PWC Opener at COTA
March 3 2015

Phoenixville, PA – Phoenix American Motorsports is looking to the dawn of a new Pirelli World Challenge season with a five car-entry set for this weekend’s event at the Circuit of the Americas. Andrew Aquilante will anchor the team’s attack in a pair of entries, racing in both GTS and Touring Car (TC) classes in two Mustangs. Alongside the five-time SCCA National Champion will be Preston Calvert, in a GT Cup Porsche 991 and GTS Mustang, and Kurt Rezzetano, also in a black and yellow GTS Mustang.

A winter of Florida SCCA events, near non-stop prep work at the team’s Pennsylvania shop and careful planning has led to a diverse entry for the opening rounds of the 2015 season. While the team fields three GTS Boss 302 Mustangs, it will debut the new Touring Car V6 Mustang and also compete in the new GT Cup class for spec Porsches.

“We certainly have taken on a big task with Pirelli World Challenge and look forward to the excellent competition that all of the PWC classes provide. We are also excited about the sprint format,” said Joe Aquilante, team owner.

With over 30 SCCA Runoffs titles and Majors Championships to their credit, the team most recently ran in Florida in the January SCCA Majors events, picking up 15 wins in 24 races.

The team’s trio of GTS Boss 302 Mustangs will compete not only against other Mustangs but the latest entries from rival teams fielding the Chevy Camaro, Kia Optima, Porsche Cayman and more. Racing in a 50-minute sprint format with no pit stops, an exciting standing start will send the GTS-only field on their way for two races at COTA.

In his GT Cup entry, Calvert will add two more starts this weekend as part of the GT class within which the GT Cup category races.

“The 2015 Porsche GT3 Cup car is a wonderful track weapon to drive,” added Calvert. “I look forward to racing with the other very capable GT Cup entrants this season, and I hope to do well in this fast company.”

Finally, Aquilante will have the busiest weekend, combining his two GTS races with a tripleheader in TC for five races in three days.

Phoenix featured in NASportsCar.com 2015 Preview

Pheonix American Motorsports - GTS Mustang Boss 302R

Ben Wedge at NASportsCar.com had this to say about Phoenix American Motorsports in a recent article.

“Phoenix is an SCCA stalwart. They have been preparing cars for club racers and professionals for years and have been winning for just as long. In 2015 the team leaves the IMSA Continental Tire series but will continue to run Ford Mustang Boss 302s, albeit in different trim. The team will prepare cars for Andrew Aquilante, Kurt Rezzetano and Preston Calvert. Both Aquilante and Calvert have won SCCA Touring championships and had strong showings in the SCCA Runoffs. Aquilante was also a factory Subaru driver when Subaru was running cars in Grand Am. This is a team is full of young talent but talent is talent. Look for all three of these drivers to be series threats.”

Preston Calvert details his first test day in the Porsche GT3 Cup car.

Phoenix American Motorsports driver Preston Calvert took some time to detail the first test day for the Porsche GT3 Cup car.

The day went well, with the car performing well out of the crate.  We learned a bit about setup for the Pirelli slick tire we will use in the GT Cup series.  The team quickly learned the specific procedures required by the Cup car for things like wheel changes, using the onboard air jacking system, bleeding the brake system, and many other nuances.  All in all, it was a very successful test day.  We will likely be back on track with the car the next time on the Test Day prior to the first Pirelli World Challenge event at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) on 3/5/15.
