Phoenix’s End of Season Assault Starts in Utah

August 18 2015

Phoenixville, PA – Two Pirelli World Challenge weekends back to back featuring four of the five remaining races will be pivotal for the Phoenix American Motorsports and Calvert Dynamics duo of Andrew Aquilante and Kurt Rezzetano, who currently sit one-two in Pirelli World Challenge GTS points. Preston Calvert, meanwhile, defends his fourth place position in the GT Cup class and is within striking distance of third overall.

While Aquilante and Rezzetano sit in front of the GTS field, the points are as tight as ever, as they are trailed closely by fellow Ford Mustang driver Dean Martin as they head into rounds 13 and 14 this coming weekend.

Two races this weekend at the massive Miller Motorsports Park facility outside of Salt Lake City will remind Aquilante and Rezzetano of Elkhart Lake and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park – where the team took victories. Both of those tracks featured fast corners and long straights, similar to Miller, which should be a strong point for Phoenix’s trio of Ford Performance entries.

A week after Miller, however, the twisting and tight Sonoma road course will provide a different challenge. With just a handful of days between events, the entire team will need to be cautious and need to take care of equipment – with little room or time for significant repairs.

The two races at Miller will be a crucial setup to the twin billing at Sonoma, which is followed by a weekend off and then the finale – a single race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where Aquilante sealed a pair of SCCA National Championship Runoffs victories in 2014.

With Rezzetano assuming the points lead after his Canadian Tire Motorsport Park victory in May, and Aquilante stealing it from his teammate after winning at Road America in June, Phoenix has controlled the Championship chase for the better part of the last four months.
