The Phoenix American Motorsports IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge team had its most successful outing of the 2014 season at Kansas Speedway on Saturday night, June 7, 2014. Kurt Rezzetano started the #32 Ford Mustang Boss 302R from 22nd place in the grid, and quickly moved up through the rest of the field. After Kurt turned the car over to Andrew Aquilante in a yellow flag pit stop, Andrew worked his way up to third place, and was closing in on the second place car, the Rum Bum Porsche driven by Matt Plumb. When Plumb had to pit for a splash of fuel near the end of the race, Andrew moved up to 2nd, where he finished. It was a very satisfying podium finish for the team, after its early season struggles.
The #35 car was started by Andrew Aquilante, who qualified it 8th. He handed it over to Preston Calvert, who ran it as high as 5th in the running order. After a final driver change to Don Knowles, who moved the #35 car up from 13th position after that stop under green flag for fuel, tire and the driver change, Don finished the car in 12th place. That was it’s best finish of the season as well.
The Phoenix pit crew was organized and effective all weekend, and the pit stops were excellent. The race engineering team of Jeff Feit, John Vincent and Ken Lin were on top of the data relayed from IMSA and the car drivers. The car setup that Andrew and Kurt put in the car was very successful for this challenging track.
Team owner, Joe Aquilante had these comments after the race: “ It was great watching the team come together and have a good result for both cars. They have been working hard all year and finally broke through to the podium.”
The Phoenix American Motorsports team now has 3 weeks to prepare for the next Continental Tire race at Watkins Glen International Raceway in Watkins Glen, NY on June 28, 2014.
